The city of Zlatoust, the oldest city in the mining zone, grew up on the site of a settlement at the Kosotursky ironworks, founded in 1754. The peculiarity of this city is that it is located on the border of Europe and Asia.

The leading industries are ferrous metallurgy, mechanical engineering and metalworking, the food industry, and the electric power industry. In the structure of production in 2001, industry accounted for 64.7%, agriculture – 0.1%, construction – 6.0%, transport and communications – 20.6%, trade and catering – 0.3%.

Agriculture is dominated by the cultivation of potatoes, vegetables, fruits and berries. Developed meat and dairy farming.
